Measurements of anisotropic scintillation efficiency for carbon recoils in a stilbene crystal for dark matter detection

چکیده
It is known that scintillation efficiency of organic single crystals depends on the direction of nuclear recoils relative to crystallographic axes. This property could be applied to the directional WIMP dark matter detector. The scintillation efficiency of carbon recoils in a stilbene crystal was measured for recoil energies of 30 keV to 1 MeV using neutrons from Li(p,n)Be and Cf. Anisotropic response was confirmed in low energy regions. The variation of the scintillation efficiency was about 7 %, that could detect the possible dark matter signal.

Dark Matter Search with Direction Sensitive Scintillator
A direction sensitive dark matter detector using organic crystals is being developed. It exploits the anisotropic scintillation efficiency of organic crystals with respect to the direction of nuclear recoils relative to crystallographic axes. A variation of about 7% was observed in the scintillation efficiency of carbon recoils in a stilbene crystal for recoil energies of 30 keV to 1MeV. We hav...
متن کاملDiscrimination between Nuclear Recoils and Electron Recoils by Simultaneous Detection of Phonons and Scintillation Light
We have developed a detector, consisting of a cryogenic calorimeter with a scintillating crystal as absorber, and a second calorimeter for the detection of the scintillation light, both operated at 12 mK. Using a CaWO4 crystal with a mass of 6 g as scintillating absorber, we have achieved a discrimination of nuclear recoils against electron recoils with a suppression factor of 99.7% at energies...

We have carried out the dark matter search with a 116g direction-sensitive stilbene crystal in Kamioka Observatory. With the crystal fixed to the earth, we searched the modulation of the light output. No modulation signal was found due to the small size of the detector crystal and the higher background rate yet to be eliminated. However, it demonstrated the effectiveness of the method of direct...
متن کاملNew Technique for the Measurement of the Scintillation Efficiency of Nuclear Recoils
We present a new technique developed for the measurement of the scintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils in solid scintillators. Using this technique we measured the quenching of the scintillation efficiency for the various recoiling nuclei in CaWO4 crystals which are used in direct Dark Matter searches.
متن کاملScintillation efficiency of nuclear recoils in a CaF2(Eu) crystal for dark matter search
The scintillation efficiency (quenching factor) of fluorine and calcium nuclei recoiling in a CaF2(Eu) crystal was measured in an energy region relevant to dark matter searches. The recoiling nuclei were obtained via the 19F(n,n’) and 40Ca(n,n’) reactions, where the neutron beam was provided via the d(d,n)3He reaction. The quenching factor of F and Ca nuclei in the CaF2(Eu) crystal was found to...
